everywhere I look
they peek down from electric lines
their beady greedy eyes
their lips the color of fire
it seems to me their beaks are longer
their wingspans greater
talons stronger
we're in for an avian attack
if we don't back off
from the sky
we've crammed the airspace
with planes and windmills and signs
and they perch, poised
to pick us off like flies
it seems to me their hunger's stronger
their taste for human flesh
long dormant
their dinosaur instinct
and their raptor teeth
will rip us apart
a congress of eagles!
a parliament of owls!
fluorescent flamingos!
a world of birds
a curious people!
with an itch to the stars!
no place in this bird world
but a taste in their jaws
it seems to me it's time
to cut and run
we can't wait 'til things just bottom out
it's not a winning hand
and if we don't back off
and if we don't start now
we'll lose ourselves
to the sky
